Dr. Saroja Devi awards for veteran awards

BANGALORE: The first ‘Padma Bhushan Dr. B. Saroja Devi National Awards' were given away at a star-studded event at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Sunday. Veteran actors Anjali Devi, Jamuna Ramana Rao and Harini S. Rao were felicitated by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation among other things. Admitting that he was an admirer of actors of yesteryear, Mr. Yeddyurappa praised Ms. Saroja for doing what the Government should have done. “They are rare actors and it is time we gave them something,” he said.

Speaking at the function, Saroja Devi urged the Government to help her implement the plan of allotting sites to needy artistes by contributing Rs. 1 crore. She also announced that the awards would be given only to female artistes as the industry was already male-dominated. On the occasion, Ms. Jamuna, who has been in the field for nearly 25 years, urged Ms. Saroja to join politics. “Politics has become a business. If people like you join politics, you will get the power to continue your charity in a bigger way,” she said. She added that other artistes should pitch in to help the poor. She also said the Government should come forward to encourage rural artistes. Meanwhile, Ms. Harini promised to use the cash prize to help artistes in need of financial help
